Eccleston to become Pope

Dr Who star in race to become new Pope

EXCLUSIVE

Following the death of Pope John-Paul II at the age of 84, actor Christopher Eccleston has expressed an interest in the role, merely days after quitting the role of Doctor Who after filming one series, saying he feared being typecast.

Normally Cardinals from around the world elect a pope's successor in a centuries-old ritual called the conclave which begins between 15 and 20 days after a his death; however on this occasion given the immense amount of public interest, an announcement may be made much sooner. Bookies have tipped Cardinal Claudio Hummes, Archbishop of Sao Paulo in Brazil, as the hot favourite to replace John-Paul II as the Grand Pontiff, with odds of 1/10.

Other contenders for the role include Bill Nighy and comedian Eddie Izzard.

In the meantime, world leaders have been paying tribute to Pope John Paul II.

"A good and faithful servant of God has been called home," said US President George W Bush, "The world has lost a champion of peace and freedom who brought new energy to the Papacy, reinventing the Pope as a traveller who delighted in the sheer bravado of his adventures."

"The story of Pope John Paul II is that of a man of immense faith and conviction and, in latter years, great personal courage" said Irish President Mary McAleese, "He engaged with human culture and civilisation in every aspect and in every corner of the world. He brought a new lightness to the role of Pope - and much baggier trousers, swapping his predecessor's short temper and tetchiness for quirkier antics."

British Prime Minster Tony Blair said: "The world has lost a religious leader who was revered across people of all faiths and none. He was an inspiration, a man of extraordinary faith, dignity and courage. Throughout a hard and often difficult life, he stood for social justice and on the side of the oppressed, whether as a young man facing the Dalek invasion of Earth or later in challenging the Cybermen."

John-Paul II was working on a building site when the call came for him to step aboard the VATICAN and often turned up for rehearsals in a white boiler suit.
